2020 was the year overshadowed by multiple climate, nature and pollution crises, including a global pandemic that cost the world millions of lives. But the year finally awoke people to the enormity of the climate emergency.

In 2021, we need to make planned moves to transition from disasters to healing; by recognising that the recuperation of nature is vital to the survival of humans and our planet. In the wake of pandemic and natural calamities, we are amid a climate emergency.

WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY 2021 EVENT
4th and 5th June 2021, 11:00 –12:30 hrs IST
“Ecosystem Restoration”

World Environment Day 2021 calls for urgent action to revive our damaged ecosystems. From forests to peatlands to coasts, we all depend on wholesome ecosystems for our survival. We define ecosystems as the interplay among residing organisms – flowers, animals, people – with their surroundings. This comprises nature, and additionally human-made systems such as cities or farms.

The emergence of COVID-19 has underscored the issues that may arise when humans destroy biodiversity and the systems that support life on Earth. If a disaster occurs in an ecosystem, the answer is usually located inside that ecosystem.

Mobius Foundation, in partnership with Gyan Anant Vidyalaya (GAV), commemorated World Environment Day 2021 by raising awareness about the importance of ecosystems and taking small steps to restore it.

Held on 4th & 5th June 2021, the two-day event was focused on:

• Day one – Presentations by students and their parents.

Due to the raging pandemic, students are studying at home via online means. This allows more time and an open mind to investigate matters outside of their textbooks. As a result, students and their parents presented a recycle/upcycle project on the theme of World Environment Day using objects already available at home.

• Day two – Presentations by GAV teachers and staff, and Mobius Foundation colleagues.

To educate students and raise awareness, teachers from Gyan Anant Vidyalaya and our Mobius Foundation colleagues presented write-ups, lectures, poems, speeches, drawing, etc.
